WA: State to get new helitankers to help fight fires
PERTH, Dec 1 AAP - Two specialised helicopters will help firefighters battle bushfiresacross Western Australia this summer.
The State Government confirmed it will use the helicopters to bolster the state's firefightingoperations.
The Eurocopter AS350 B3 helitankers are highly manoeuvrable and can reach bushlandinaccessible to firefighting teams on the ground.
Premier Geoff Gallop said the two heli-tankers could drop up to 30,000 litres of wateron a bushfire each hour.
"The helitankers can be refilled in less than one minute from portable supplies, staticsupplies or from airfield bases and can drop water accurately and with fast turn-aroundtimes," Dr Gallop said.
"The helicopters can also inject foam into the tank during flight to increase the effectivenessof drops," he said.
