NSW: Search for missing tourist to be scaled up

Police will step up the search today for a Japanese tourist missing in the waters off
a Sydney beach.

A police search failed to find the 30-year-old woman who went missing while scuba diving
off Manly's Shelly Beach at about 2.45pm (AEDT) yesterday.

Sydney water police, divers and land police are expected to resume the search at 7am (AEDT).

A helicopter with spotlight and a police boat continued the search until after 9.30pm
but couldn't find anything.

A police spokesman says the woman was a certified diver and was diving with another
30-year-old woman and a guide from a local dive company.

When the woman noticed she was missing, she alerted rescuers.

Police say last night's high winds and choppy seas made it hard to do anyting.

The spokesman says there were several divers from different dive companies at Shelly
Beach at the time he tourist went missing.
