Early signs point to Irish rejection of European Union treaty

The European Union's reform treaty faced a rising threat of Irish rejection Friday as early, unofficial tallies of votes demonstrated strong support among "no" voters.

Politicians from the government and major opposition parties appeared grim-faced as counting progressed in 43 constituencies nationwide. Anti-treaty activists expressed growing confidence they would triumph when official results are declared Friday afternoon.
